Anthony Joshua defends WBA, WBO, IBF heavyweight titles TKO of Alexander Povetkin

Anthony Joshua further boosted his claim to be the biggest active star in boxing with a thudding seventh-round stoppage of Alexander Povetkin on Saturday. In front of 80,000 of his noisy compatriots at Wembley Stadium, Joshua defended his WBA, WBO and IBF world heavyweight titles and more big things await. USA TODAY Sports' Martin Rogers breaks down the fight round by round below, but first, it is worth considering what might come next for the British big man. The heavyweight division has been snoozing for longer than any boxing fan cares to remember, but it is alive and well now. Much of that is a result of the buzz and excitement surrounding Joshua, who has knocked out all but one of his opponents. Hopefully, for the sake of the sport, his next fight with be against the winner of December's battle between WBC champ Deontay Wilder and former title holder Tyson Fury. The prospect of a UK v. USA feud between Joshua and Wilder would immediately become next year

Dana White targets early 2019 for Jon Jones return

Jon Jones   will be eligible to compete again on Oct. 28, but   Dana White   claims that the controversial former UFC champion will likely return to action early next year. On Wednesday, it was revealed that Jones received a   15-month suspension   from USADA, the UFC’s anti-doping policy, for his failed drug test from a sample collected July 28, 2017. There has been ample speculation regarding the possibility of Jones headlining   UFC 230   at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 3, but the UFC president’s latest comments have thrown water on that idea. “Beginning of next year,” White told ESPN’s ‘Get Up’ show when asked about Jones’ return. “He’s been off for awhile. I think he’s a little heavy right now and he needs to start cutting weight and getting back into shape and we should see him early next year.” White also discussed how Jones ended up receiving a shortened suspension for the offense. “[USADA] had a third party independent investigator come in and investiga

'Captain Marvel' first trailer

Finally, the world got its first look at Brie Larson as a Marvel superhero, and she's definitely lit – quite literally, since she's crazy powerful. The first trailer for "Captain Marvel" (in theaters March 8, 2019) made its debut Tuesday with Larson in all her glory as Carol Danvers, the superhero that comic-book fans and everyone else has been waiting to see since Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury hit the button on a beeper with a familiar red-blue-and-gold star logo at the end of "Avengers: Infinity War." While we're still waiting to see how Carol will factor into Marvel's future – specifically, her role in "Avengers 4" (out May 3, 2019) – the new footage showcases the universe's past, as "Captain Marvel" takes place in the 1990s. Man charged with first-degree murder in death of Iowa State golfer Celia Barquin Arozamena

A 22-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Iowa State golfer Celia Barquin Arozamena, the 2018 Big 12 champion and the school's female athlete of the year. Barquin Arozamena, 22, was found dead Monday at a golf course in Ames, Iowa. Ames police on Monday night announced that Collin Daniel Richards has been charged following an investigation by several law enforcement agencies. Richards made his initial appearance at the Story County Courthouse in Nevada, Iowa, at 9 a.m. Tuesday; bond was set at $5 million during a brief hearing. Officers were called to Coldwater Golf Course on Monday morning after golfers had located a golf bag with no one around it. Officers located Barquin Arozamena's body in a pond near the ninth hole of the course and determined she had been assaulted. Barquin Arozamena suffered "several stab wounds to the upper torso, head and neck," Ames police said in a criminal complaint. At the appearance, Story Coun

Man dies after shark attack on Cape Cod

A swimmer at a Cape Cod beach died Saturday in what experts believe is the first fatal shark attack in Massachusetts in more than 80 years. The man was bitten about noon ET at Newcomb Hollow Beach, Wellfleet police said. Witnesses told responding officers that the victim and another man were boogie boarding 30 yards off the beach when the incident occurred. Arthur Medici, 26, of Revere, Massachusetts, was given first aid, including CPR, but died at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. His name was released by Cape and Islands Assistant District Attorney Tara Miltimore. Bunker Hill Community College released a statement saying Medici, an engineering transfer option major, was enrolled as a part-time student in the spring. Chris Hartsgrove, acting deputy chief of Cape Cod National Seashore, said the injuries appeared to be from a shark. The official cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner. Robert Bessler, a Wellfleet resident and surfer, told CNN that

Packers benefit from Vikings' miscues, escape with 29-29 tie

GREEN BAY – Aaron Rodgers said a week ago that if you can play, and deal with pain, you should be out on the field. He backed that up again Sunday afternoon — with the aid of a brace on his left knee. But the Packers were given a gift of Vikings’ sloppiness to walk away without a loss in a 29-29 final at Lambeau Field. Vikings kicker Daniel Carlson missed three field goals — including two in overtime — allowing the Packers to swallow Mason Crosby’s own missed game-winner at the end of regulation. Games between good teams are decided by the smallest things and individual miscues by the Vikings on offense, defense and special teams led to big things for the Packers. Of the Vikings’ 13 offensive possessions, eight featured either penalty, a blocked punt, missed field goals, drops or a sack. Their four “clean” possessions led to touchdowns in regulation. Defensively, allowing Aaron Rodgers to run for seven yards on a 3rd-and-7 led to a touchdown. Two roughing calls, an

The Ohio State vs. TCU live blog: Buckeyes use third-quarter surge to survive, 40-28

Live blog by Bill Connelly Fourth Quarter 0:00 That’ll do it.  Dobbins  rips off a 17-yarder, then Ohio State takes a knee from there. The Buckeyes have survived.  OSU 40, TCU 28 . 2:37 And that’ll about do it. TCU moves the chains once, but with the clock ticking toward two minutes, Robinson has to get aggressive, and  Malik Harrison  picks off a pass at the TCU 40. He returns it to the 25, and Ohio State will run out the clock.  OSU 40, TCU 28 . 3:22 Up two possessions, Ohio State eats clock with perfection. Two Weber rushes move the chains once; then, when Weber loses yardage on first down, Haskins fires a dart to  Hill  for 14 yards and another first down. Two more Weber carries move the chains again as the clock moves under five minutes. TCU stiffens from there, as three Weber rushes gain just five yards. But the Buckeyes punts having eaten more than five minutes off the clock.  OSU 40, TCU 28 . 8:51 TCU’s receivers come up big for a while. On third-and-8,
