Alabama man | hit with more than 6,500 child | porn charges
An Alabama man has been jailed for allegedly running a child pornography production operation involving at least ten children from the area in which he lives, resulting in more than 6,500 charges, police say.
Jeffery Dale Hunt, 50, of Cherokee, was indicted Friday on 6,547 counts of child pornography involving multiple children and his bail has been set at $10 million cash.
"I don't know that he'll ever see the outside of a jail again unless it's from a recreational yard or going to court," Sgt. Greg Cobb, a spokesman for the Florence Police Department, told the Associated Press.
Hunt was arrested this week while free on bond from a previous arrest on child pornography charges, Cobb added.
"The detective handling the case is having to go through now and unfortunately view every one of these images on every device,” he said.
An indictment returned this week included 4,378 counts of possession of child pornography and 2,169 counts of producing child porn, according to the Associated Press.
The number of children involved is at least in the double digits and all are from the area where Hunt lives, Cobb said.
Authorities are still investigating to determine how many total images are involved, since some could be duplicates. Under Alabama law, multiple felony charges can result from a single image if it's stored on more than one device.
An attorney representing Hunt didn't immediately return an email from the Associated Press seeking comment.
Hunt, whose jobs included working at a home improvement store, was charged with having more than 2,200 images of child pornography last year. He re-arrested following the indictment this week, Cobb said.
Hunt would have to put up cash or property worth $10 million to be released again while awaiting trial, Cobb said.
