These are the best vegan-friendly restaurants in central Pa., according to online reviewers
Being a vegan or vegetarian isn’t the easiest lifestyle choice to make. Vegan means not eating or using animal products, so going out to eat with a group of non-vegan friends means finding items on a menu that could work.
That is, unless, you find a restaurant that can cater to both.
These are the best vegan- and vegetarian-friendly restaurants in central Pa. We took into account both the rating and number of reviews in our analysis, which examined multiple review platforms.
In a special treat, we’ve asked York Daily Record trending issues reporter Geoff Morrow, a longtime vegetarian, for his take on each of the restaurants to verify their veggie-friendly status.
Geoff's story about being a vegetarian is an interesting one. You can watch him tell the story here.

A veggie's view: “Jackfruit stands out immediately as it’s popular in certain vegetarian circles. Jackfruit tacos sound quite delicious. The General Tso cauliflower is something I'd really want to try. Disappointing that Grilled Jackfruit Cakes, as tasty as it sounds, is only vegetarian/vegan dish among the main courses. But there's enough among shareables, sides and salads to qualify it as veggie-friendly.”
A promising review: "We went for dinner to celebrate our birthday. We ordered the General Tsao's cauliflower upon recommendation. It was delish!! I have a lot of dietary restrictions and they were knowledgeable and accommodating." -- Brooke W.

Mellow Minded Café
A veggie's view: “I've eaten here a few times. Bonus is they allow your dogs to accompany you at the outside tables. Definitely a vegetarian-friendly menu. Favorites are Vegetarian BLT (with tempeh bacon), or black bean tacos. Plenty of options, too, among sides/salads/smoothies.
A promising review: "This is the place to go if you have unusual dietary needs. They have a lot of vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options on the menu. Best vegan breakfast around." -- Daniel Weiss

District Thai
A veggie's view: “Thai food, in general, provides options. Love me some garden rolls and/or spring rolls, plus crispy tofu. Not vegan, but I'd be down to try cream cheese wonton. And the pumpkin empanada could be delicious. Best part about Thai places is they build their signature dishes around your choice, whether it's chicken, pork, beef, shrimp or, for my kind, vegetable and tofu. I would try this place in a heartbeat.”
A promising review: "The food is great and reasonably priced. The spicy levels are definitely designed to appeal to a large section of the population. If you prefer it hotter, ask if the wait staff will have the kitchen hook it up." -- Daniel Culbert

Root
A veggie's view: “This place is outstanding, arguably the best vegan restaurant in the 717. Went here for my 40th birthday, and I'm dying to go back. Menu changes every 6-8 weeks, but there are staples, and everything I had last summer was incredible. I won't single out any one item because I kind of want to try all of them.”
A promising review: "Very good vegan food. The atmosphere is great. It is a wonderful, flavorful food venue. Even those who are not vegans will find the food delicious and savory." -- Christopher Ensminger

World Grills
A veggie's view: “Another place I hadn't heard of but am now dying to try. Menu really caters to vegans and vegetarians, though it's not a vegan restaurant (like Root). Outstanding options, plentiful and appetizing, including curries, appetizers, soups, etc., plus a ‘build your own’ option.”
A promising review: "I ordered the Panang Salmon and it was wonderful. Simple and beautifuly presented. It was a flavor sensation. For an appetizer, I ordered the pumpkin empanadas, which were an exciting opener to the meal to come." -- Sam I.
